I Met The Potentate|

Yeah, that's right, I met the Potentate.
"The Potentate?" you ask. "Yes, the Potentate."
"Doesn't that make you think of the phrase 'sway I'm tate nabate' ?" you ask. "Yes, every time."
His Illustrious Sir, Barry Cook, Potentate, is the President of the Murat Shriners, Indiana's largets Shrine club. Stef's dad belongs to Murat, and Tarum (Murat backwards) which is the local Richmond, IN branch. 2 Weekends ago, he was sworn in as Vice President of the Tarum Shrine. Also, as a suprise, Stef's mom got the Presidents Award at the ceremony. It was the first time a woman ever got the award.
Stef and I attended the ceremony, and I snapped a few pictures. Look at all those funny fezzes!

I think I have my house in Indy sold. And I'm not even going to lose my ass on it, either! I think I may come out up or down around $1000, depending on what happens to my proratred insurance payment and escrowed tax payments.
Original list price: $128,490, including appliances.
Their offer: $128,490, I pay $4100 of buyers closing costs, they get appliances.
My counter: $129,490, I pay $3000 buyers closing costs, I keep appliances. (Accepted)
Not too bad... I am coming down about $1000 net from my original list. It's a shame that I could have made a cool 10k on this house had I been able to sell it on my own. Instead, John Sturm of FC Tucker is walking away with a 10k paycheck for about 40 hours worth of work. But, I'm not bitter, I'm just happy to be getting this over with and into my new house.

First of all, I'm not a very political person. Granted, I tend to vote republican when I vote, but that's few and far between. Anyway, I hate that Howard Dean guy. He's nuts. I think I'd elect .org as president before I'd elect Dean.
When Howard Dean lost in Iowa a few days ago, he gave a pretty obnoxious speech about how he wasn't going to let the defeat stop him. When I dug up this audio clip (an unadulterated excerpt from his speech), I almost shit my pants. How can anyone in their right mind vote for this guy?

Stef and I watched the first part of the Colts game at Barkley's house Sunday while dining on deep fried turkey. Quite tasty. Sampled some of his homebrew ass wheel. Also tasty. The game pretty much sucked from what I can piece together with my limited knowledge of football, but atleast it was an excuse to stuff my face and have a few beers.
There are those of us who had more than a few beers, though. "Who?" you may ask. "JCTMH".
JCTMH is a big colts fan, and sports fan in general. He called me shortly after the game ended. He was at BW3's in Chicago somewhere, and he was feeling the flow, working it, workin it:

First of all, I think it's stupid that vacuum has two u's and no e's in it. Did we get this word from Russia or something? As it turns out, no: (Latin, empty space, from neuter of vacuus, empty, from vac re, to be empty.)
Anyway, as a favor to my buddy Scuba Steve, I decided to let a Rainbow salesman come to my house and demo an E-Series Rainbow Cleaning System (vacuum cleaner). As it turns out, Scuba Steve gets all kinds of freebies from Rainbow for giving out name and nubers as referrals, or "green lights" as the salesman called them.
Let me back up to the true origins of this story. About a week ago, Steve emiled the duck:
have to move a desk for my mom after work, then have to watch a vaccuum salesman waste my time for about an hour, to get free attachments for a guy i work with who bought one of these things
We discussed vacuum cleaners cleaners for a while, and chuckeled at how anyone could spend $1700 on a vacuum. A good hearty laugh was had by all. The next day, Steve shot out another email:
bought a rainbow sweeper last night, wasn't planning on it, but they sold us on it. by us, i mean her. doesn't bother me to buy it though, since we won't have to buy another sweeper for 30 years. plus the shit that comes out of our old sweeper, which is only 3 months old, was disgusting. anyway, anyone interested in doing a demo, to help me get free stuff? you're not expected to buy anything, and you get a free 3 day, 2 night mini vacation, which i think is real, unlike the one dooley won. if i get 8 demos signed up, we get a free upholstery attachment, and a shampooer.
Hole, e, shit, he bought one. We were floored, and another good hearty laugh was had by all. M1, in particular had a pretty funny response:
i own something that costs 15% more, and also does not have a filter to dick with. while it does not pick crud off my floor, it also uses no electricity.
it's called my car.
as an added bonus, i can move great distances by simply pressing on the controls.
Now, fast forward to last night. Mike, the Rainbow salesman from Bloomington, showed up at my door at 7:30. He brought in a few boxes and started unpacking. He was disapointed that Stefanie wasn't there yet - "It's a little more difficult when both parties don't see the demo, she won't understand why you want to buy one", he said. "I have no intention of buying a $1700 vacuum cleaner", I thought.
He did his thing, vacuumed up some junk from the carpet after I had gone over it with our old vacuum, showed me how the air/water filter doo-dad worked, and showed me the awesome, raw cleaning power that you get when you combine suction, airflow, AND water. And I was sold, I bought one then and there.
Really? No, not really. About 1/2 way through his demo, Stef showed up. He insisted on starting over so she could see everything. I refused his request. So he continued, vacuuming, showing me attachments, fluffing pillows, scenting the air, etc. for about 45 more minutes. Finally, the moment of truth arrived.
Mike: So do you like the rainbow?
Mike: Do you think it is a good cleaning system?
Mike: If you had one, would you use it?
Mike: Do you like me?
Me (confused): Uh... yes?
Mike: Do you want to help me out?
Me: I guess so.
Mike: Would you like to buy a rainbow from me, tonight, at the special price of $1700?
Mike: Why not?
Me: Because $1700 is an order of magnitude more that I would pay for a vacuum.
Mike: What do you think a fair price would be?
Me: Well... (wanted to say $150)
Stef: I think the price is fine, we just cant afford to spend that kind of money right now, but we appreciate your time, and thanks for the demo.
Boo-yah, Stef swooped in to save the day. I think Mike took the hint. He spent the next 20 minutes or so packing up his equipment and making small talk, all the while trying to get more names and numbers out of me. I told him I wouldn't feel comfortable giveing out names before asking permission, but that I would call in some contacts for him if I knew of any.
All in all, the demo took 2 hours. It was slightly entertaining. I conclude that the Rainbow is a good cleaning device, but about $1550 too expensive for my blood.

Stef and I went and looked at a few houses Sunday. All of them are in the same neighborhood, and of the 5 or 6 we looked at, there were 3 that we liked. I'm having a hard time picking out which one I like best, so I was hoping for some help.
All houses have 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and full walk-out basements. All of the lot sizes are between .22 and .3 acres.
House A made the cut because it has a really big garage (27'6" X 21'6") and a nice big bonus room above it. Garages on the other houses are around 20 X 20, so comparitively, House A's garage is a monster. It also has nice vaulted ceilings, a big master bedroom and a neat entryway into the basement. The lots is slightly wooded in the back. The driveway has a sewer cap right in the middle of it. Also, the bathrooms are pretty tiny and there isnt much closet space on the first floor. This house could be finished by the end of Feb. and is 136,990 for 1428 square feet.
House B has a nce, big kitchen with an open wall/bar into the living room. It has a seperate dining room and a cool basement layout. The basement is already framed for finishing and the rest of the house is pretty much done. It could be ready for move-in in under 3 weeks. There were no vaulted ceilings, but the rooms seemed layed out better and wider. This house is 129,990 for1294 square feet.
House C is a lot like house B in that it has a nice kitchen, cool basement layout (framed) and no vaulted ceilings. The lot that it is on is much nicer, flat a deep with lots of room for a big patio, deck, etc. It has lots of closet space in the bedrooms and kitchen and is ready to be sold as-is. The kitchen was not open to the living room, but the back dining room is pretty big and open. $132,990 for 1473 square feet.
Please to helping me decide.
